Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Manchester United plans to sign at least one new midfielder in 2026, with Atlético Madrid's Conor Gallagher identified as a potential target.

Following a season where United successfully bolstered their attack by signing Cunha, Sesko, and Mbeumo, the club's focus for 2026 is shifting to other areas, particularly the midfield. This move is driven partly by Rúben Amorim's apparent non-reliance on young English talent Kobbie Mainoo and the muted impact of summer signing Manuel Ugarte.

Romano stated that Gallagher remains a viable opportunity, despite Atlético Madrid rejecting offers for him last summer. While winter transfer activity might be limited—as German clubs are reluctant to sell core players like Stuttgart's Stiller, another admired target—the summer window is expected to bring the real changes. "It's certain that Manchester United will add at least one midfielder in 2026," Romano affirmed.

Crucially, Manchester United sees Gallagher's extensive Premier League experience from his time at Chelsea and Crystal Palace as a major advantage, meaning he would require minimal adaptation time. Although he is not an undisputed starter at Atlético Madrid, he offers versatility, having played multiple roles under Diego Simeone.

Any potential deal would be expensive, as Gallagher currently earns a substantial salary and is contracted with Atlético until the summer of 2028.
