Manchester Unveils £10 Billion City Investment Plan, But United Cannot Use Funds for New Stadium

In a major development for Manchester United's new stadium project, the government has for the first time committed significant public funding toward the overall regeneration of the area surrounding Old Trafford.

Although United understand they cannot rely on any public funds for the construction of the proposed 100,000-seat stadium itself, their plans still depend on support from local and national governments for the wider project.

On Thursday, Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham unveiled a city investment plan exceeding £10 billion, with an initial £26 million allocated to build 382 new homes as part of the Trafford Wharf development.

United still face other challenges. Negotiations continue with the Freightliner Group, which owns a former railway freight yard site near Old Trafford, for the land needed for development, and support from the central government is also required. The club still needs to secure financing for the stadium construction itself, which experts estimate could cost up to £3 billion.

However, Burnham's commitment represents a step forward. United Chief Operating Officer Collette Roche stated: "We are delighted to see the redevelopment of Old Trafford positioned as a cornerstone of Greater Manchester's overall development plan for the next decade.

We aim to build the world's best football stadium, serving as a new home for Manchester United and a prime venue for major international events, including the 2035 FIFA Women's World Cup. The stadium will be surrounded by a vibrant district featuring commercial, leisure, and residential facilities, supported by an accessible transport network.

We are determined to work collaboratively with other stakeholders to realize this vision and unlock its substantial benefits for the surrounding community and the wider region."

The ultimate goal is to construct up to 15,000 new homes in the vicinity of United's state-of-the-art new stadium.
