Bayer Leverkusen Sporting Director Simon Rolfes clarified the decision to dismiss manager Erik ten Hag, emphasizing that the move was not based on immediate match results but on the atmosphere and a lack of conviction regarding the team's future direction.
Rolfes explained that early on, the club sensed they were "moving in a bad direction." Despite the possibility of a difficult start, the situation became so challenging that a fundamental decision had to be made. Ten Hag's tenure ended after Leverkusen’s 3-3 draw against Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga’s second round.
Rolfes strongly asserted that the firing was not due to failing to beat Bremen. He stated the decision would have been made even with a victory, citing the prevailing atmosphere and a clear lack of belief that the team was progressing toward success.
The Sporting Director emphasized that the club recognized the situation "wouldn't work out" and deemed it better for all parties, including Ten Hag, to make the decision early rather than waiting until later in the season.
