Toluca clinched the Liga MX Apertura (Autumn League) final title after defeating Tigres UANL in a dramatic 12-round penalty shootout, with Ángel Correa missing the crucial spot-kick in the final round.
In the first leg of the final, Tigres secured a narrow 1-0 victory. However, Toluca fought back in the second leg, winning 2-1 in regular time, which tied the aggregate score at 2-2. With neither side scoring during extra time, the championship was decided by penalties.
The shootout proved to be an epic battle. Both teams were tied at 4-4 after the initial five rounds. Rounds 6 through 9 were converted successfully, and both teams missed in rounds 10 and 11. In the 12th round, Ángel Correa, stepping up for his second penalty attempt, missed. Vega then successfully converted his attempt, sealing the victory for Toluca with a final penalty score of 9-8.
Toluca’s victory, secured through a grueling 12-round shootout, crowned them the champions of the Liga MX Apertura tournament.
