John Herdman Praises Legacy of Shin Tae-yong and Patrick Kluivert in Indonesia National Team Transition

New Indonesia national team head coach John Herdman has praised the tactical foundations left behind by his predecessors Shin Tae-yong and Patrick Kluivert, highlighting a strong defensive structure and an increasingly progressive attacking approach.

Speaking ahead of Indonesia’s FIFA Series 2026 clash against Saint Kitts and Nevis, Herdman made it clear he does not intend to overhaul the team’s identity. Instead, he aims to build on the solid groundwork already in place.

He noted that Shin Tae-yong’s tenure established a disciplined and compact defensive system, which he described as a key asset for the team. Meanwhile, Kluivert introduced a more expansive and attack-minded style, pushing Indonesia to play with greater ambition going forward.

Herdman emphasized that his approach will be evolutionary rather than revolutionary—retaining defensive stability while improving transitions and attacking organization to make the team more dynamic and direct.

With preparations underway, Indonesia will look to combine the strengths of both previous eras as Herdman begins his tenure, aiming to elevate the team to the next level on the international stage.
