England Fans Hit by Sky-High Parking Costs at FIFA World Cup Amid Travel Price Surge

England Fans Hit by Sky-High Parking Costs at FIFA World Cup Amid Travel Price Surge

According to a latest report by The Sun, England fans are set to face outrageously high parking fees during this summer’s FIFA World Cup—yet another heavy financial blow.

Fans travelling to matches have already been forced to spend hundreds of pounds on tickets—excluding transport and accommodation. For those planning to drive, parking alone could cost several hundred pounds more.

The Three Lions’ second match will take place at Gillette Stadium in Boston. However, due to a reduction in parking capacity, fees around the venue are reported at £110 ($150) per car, while “oversized vehicles” will be charged as much as £442 ($600). Parking spaces have been cut from the usual 20,000 down to just 5,000 to allow for expanded security perimeters.

Fans have also been advised to arrive more than an hour before kick-off. A FIFA statement read: “Gates will open three hours prior to kick-off. We recommend arriving at least 90 minutes early to allow time for security checks and travel delays.”

Meanwhile, the long-standing American tradition of pre-game tailgating in parking lots has been banned. At games of the New England Patriots, this has been described as “a key social ritual where fans gather with grills, chairs, and music to create a festive atmosphere”—but FIFA officials have prohibited it.

Earlier, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority confirmed that train fares for visitors have quadrupled to £60 ($80). With no MBTA bus or subway services running directly to the stadium, fans have very limited transport options.

Additionally, fans seeking the best seats for the World Cup final at MetLife Stadium (renamed “New York New Jersey Stadium” for the tournament) will need to pay around £8,300.

England will face Croatia national football team in Dallas on June 17 in their opening group match, before taking on Ghana national football team in Boston six days later. The Three Lions will then play their final group match against Panama national football team in New York–New Jersey on June 27.
