Anthony Gordon, Elliot Anderson and Dan Burn all took part enthusiastically. Spence, who came on as a substitute at left wing-back in the second half of England’s win over Mexico, jumped into the pool wearing his socks, leaving fans in stitches. As he counted down before making the dive, Spence told the spectators: “I’m scared.” After entering the water, he was awarded a score of 5 out of 10 and said to the camera: “This is only the second time I’ve ever dived in my life. How did I do?”
Defensive hero Dan Burn was much more impressive, completing a backflip and earning a score of 7. Burn had received widespread praise for his defensive display at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City. He then returned to the diving board and performed a similar move, scoring 8 points. He also applauded Elliot Anderson, who earned 8 points for his dive into the pool.
Winger Anthony Gordon struggled with his attempt, scoring just 3 points after trying a traditional dive but making a heavy impact on entry. His second attempt was much better, earning him 8 points, but the title went to Anderson, who produced a double somersault to score 9 points. Burn praised him, saying it was “incredible”.
The England national team shared footage of the competition on their social media accounts, with Spence’s unusual outfit leaving fans amused. One fan wrote: “Jumping into a pool wearing socks is absolutely wild.” Another commented: “Jedd, my friend, why are you wearing socks in the pool?” Someone else added: “Wearing socks on a diving board should be a crime.”
After defeating Mexico, England returned to their base in Kansas City and are now preparing for their match against Norway in Miami on Saturday night. If they can overcome the Norway side led by Erling Haaland, they will face either Argentina or Switzerland in the semi-finals.
