As the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico reaches the quarter-final stage, German legend Lothar Matthäus believes Spain, England and Argentina will each defeat their opponents and secure places in the semi-finals.

Spain 2-1 Belgium
This will be a battle between two highly capable managers, both of whom have built strong connections with their teams. I was particularly impressed by Belgium head coach Rudi Garcia’s composure when his team was 0-2 down against Senegal. It was encouraging to see him remain calm and deliver clear instructions during the second hydration break. His players trust him.
The same can be said about Luis de la Fuente. In the Round of 16 match against Portugal, he made a crucial substitution late in the game. The difference between the two teams is that De la Fuente has players with greater individual quality at his disposal.
I predict Spain will concede the opening goal, but they will eventually come back and win the match.
Norway 1-2 England
We are all looking forward to this match! Norway performed excellently against Brazil and deserved their victory, largely thanks to Erling Haaland and their outstanding goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland. Norway’s reliance on Haaland may even be greater than England’s dependence on Harry Kane.
Thomas Tuchel’s England showed remarkable determination in their 3-2 victory over Mexico, overcoming difficult conditions including the high altitude, playing with 10 men, and being away from home.
Norway are my dark horses of the tournament, but I believe England have the stronger overall squad.
Argentina 2-0 Switzerland
Although Argentina struggled against Egypt, a Lionel Messi-led Argentina team will be a challenge that Switzerland cannot overcome.
As the World Cup has progressed, coach Murat Yakin has successfully improved Switzerland’s defensive organization, and they have yet to concede a goal in the knockout stages. However, Argentina are not a team that relies only on Messi for goals. Switzerland’s attacking ability is not strong enough to pose a serious threat to Argentina.
