Ronaldo Fans Storm Madeira Cathedral Believing He Was Getting Married, But Mistake a Stranger’s Wedding

According to The Sun, a bizarre and amusing scene unfolded on Portugal’s Madeira Island on Saturday. Thousands of Cristiano Ronaldo fans rushed to a local cathedral, believing that the football superstar was about to hold a grand wedding ceremony with his fiancée Georgina Rodríguez. However, they ended up surrounding a completely unrelated ordinary couple.

More than 2,000 fans gathered in the square outside Funchal Cathedral that day. Many were wearing Ronaldo’s iconic No.7 shirts, creating a highly enthusiastic atmosphere. When a grey Rolls-Royce slowly entered the square and prepared to let the bride step out, the crowd instantly erupted. Hundreds of people rushed forward, raising their phones and competing to capture what they believed was Georgina arriving at her wedding.

The newlyweds’ relatives and friends were forced to struggle through the crowd to create a path for the bride. One guest shouted helplessly to the media:

“The groom Fabio is not Cristiano Ronaldo! This is crazy. We never expected to face a situation like this.”

    Another guest joked:

“I think the groom will never forget this wedding for the rest of his life.”

In reality, the couple getting married that day were local residents Fábio Ramos and Fátima Nicol. To maintain order, the bridesmaids had to do their best to shield the bride from the crowd and escort her safely into the cathedral.

The priest who officiated the ceremony, Marcos Gonçalves, later clarified to the media:

“I can clearly tell everyone that this wedding has nothing to do with Cristiano Ronaldo. This is the only wedding taking place here today.”

The priest also added that Ronaldo had not booked any wedding venue at the cathedral recently.

The fans’ unusual reaction was not completely without reason. Recently, rumors that 41-year-old Ronaldo and his 32-year-old fiancée Georgina were preparing to get married have spread widely across Portugal. A fake wedding invitation even circulated on a Portuguese television program, claiming that the couple would marry on August 1 at a palace in Sintra, although the report was later denied by the media.

With the new Saudi Pro League season set to begin next week, many people speculated that Ronaldo wanted to complete this major life event before returning to club duty, further fueling fans’ excitement and expectations.

Ronaldo and Georgina officially became engaged in August last year. After finishing their 2026 World Cup campaign in the United States, the couple have been traveling around Europe with their family, recently spending most of their time in Mallorca. Although they do reportedly plan to hold a wedding later this year, it was clearly not at the Madeira cathedral where fans mistakenly gathered.

It is worth mentioning that Ronaldo himself also noticed the news of thousands of fans attending the wrong wedding. He responded in the comments section with five laughing emojis, finding the situation amusing.
