João Cancelo’s Barcelona Return Faces New Twist as Al Hilal Keep Him in Their Plans

João Cancelo’s Barcelona Return Faces New Twist as Al Hilal Keep Him in Their Plans

João Cancelo’s potential return to Barcelona has encountered another complication after Al Hilal included the Portuguese defender in their squad and assigned him a shirt number for the upcoming season. The decision suggests that the Saudi club still considers Cancelo part of its plans, despite Barcelona continuing to work toward bringing him back to Camp Nou. While the move does not necessarily mean the transfer has collapsed, it could strengthen Al Hilal’s negotiating position as they attempt to secure the best possible financial outcome.

Barcelona remain confident that an agreement can be completed before the end of the month, but the latest development could make the final stage of negotiations more difficult. Al Hilal may now have greater incentive to demand a higher transfer fee, particularly after showing that Cancelo remains within their squad plans. At the same time, the arrival of defender Mohammed Mahzari has created uncertainty over Cancelo’s long-term role in the team, meaning the decision to give him a squad number may also be a strategic move rather than confirmation that he will stay.

Cancelo has already enjoyed two spells with Barcelona and reportedly developed a strong desire to return after his latest period at the club proved positive. He established himself as an important player during that stint and strengthened his reputation before representing Portugal at the World Cup. Following Portugal’s early elimination, Cancelo was increasingly associated with a move back to Catalonia. Barcelona and the player are believed to have already reached an agreement over personal terms, while the proposed transfer fee has reportedly moved closer to €10 million.

The remaining obstacle is therefore largely centered on negotiations between the two clubs. Cancelo has returned to training with Al Hilal under Simone Inzaghi, adding further uncertainty to the situation, although Barcelona continue to believe the transfer can be completed before the end of the month. The Catalan club will need to handle the negotiations carefully if Al Hilal increases its demands. Barcelona could either accept a higher valuation to secure the defender or explore alternative solutions, but Cancelo’s desire to return to Camp Nou remains an important factor in the developing transfer saga.
