Xavi Hernandez has officially been appointed as the new head coach of the Netherlands, replacing Ronald Koeman after the Oranje endured a disappointing 2026 World Cup campaign. The former Barcelona manager has agreed to a contract running through the 2030 World Cup, giving him the opportunity to oversee the national team at Euro 2028 as well. The appointment marks Xavi’s return to coaching after spending two years away from the dugout following his departure from Barcelona in 2024.

The 46-year-old arrives with a strong connection to Dutch football and its tactical traditions. His development at Barcelona was heavily influenced by the ideas of Johan Cruyff and Rinus Michels, while working with coaches such as Louis van Gaal and Frank Rijkaard also shaped his understanding of the game. Xavi is expected to build on those principles by encouraging possession-based football, creativity, attacking intent, and confidence while maintaining the Netherlands’ established footballing identity.

Xavi brings considerable coaching experience despite his recent absence from the game. He began his managerial career with Al Sadd in 2019 and won seven trophies during his time in Qatar before returning to Barcelona in 2021. At Camp Nou, he guided the club to the LaLiga title in the 2022-23 season and added the Spanish Super Cup in 2023. As a player, he also enjoyed an outstanding international career with Spain, winning the 2008 European Championship, the 2010 World Cup, and Euro 2012.

His appointment comes at a crucial moment for the Netherlands after their early elimination from the 2026 World Cup, where they were beaten by Morocco in the round of 32. The long-term contract gives Xavi plenty of time to reshape the squad, introduce his preferred style, and develop a team capable of competing at the highest level. Euro 2028 will provide his first major test, while the ultimate objective will be to establish a stronger Netherlands side capable of making a deep run at the 2030 World Cup.
