Barcelona have completed the signing of Rodri from Manchester City for an initial €60 million, with the total fee potentially rising by another €16.5 million through performance-related bonuses. The 30-year-old midfielder has agreed to a four-year contract with the Spanish champions after deciding to leave City following seven successful seasons. He reportedly rejected interest from Real Madrid as Barcelona became his preferred destination.
Rodri arrives at Camp Nou with an extraordinary collection of honours and experience. Since joining Manchester City from Atlético Madrid in 2019, he has won four Premier League titles and the Champions League, while also achieving major international success with Spain. His achievements include winning the European Championship and World Cup, with his performances earning him the Ballon d’Or in 2024, making him the first Spanish man to receive the award since Luis Suárez in 1960.
Barcelona moved quickly once Rodri became available, particularly after his contract situation at City indicated an opportunity to secure one of the world’s leading midfielders. His arrival also comes at a time when Frenkie de Jong is dealing with an injury, while coach Hansi Flick has been looking for greater leadership and authority within the squad. Rodri is expected to provide stability and tactical intelligence alongside Pedri, Gavi, Dani Olmo, Marc Bernal and Fermín López.
The move represents a major statement of intent from Barcelona as they look to strengthen an already talented young squad. Rodri is eager to begin working under Flick and believes the coach’s aggressive style can complement his own qualities while helping him continue to develop. After spending much of the summer with several Barcelona players during Spain’s World Cup campaign, he already has familiarity with many of his new teammates and is expected to compete for a regular starting role as soon as he reaches full fitness.
