Chelsea are reportedly preparing a major January move for Atletico Madrid midfielder Pablo Barrios as they look to rebuild their midfield following Enzo Fernandez’s departure to Manchester City. The Blues are believed to be ready to offer around €100 million, or approximately £85.6 million, for the 23-year-old, with manager Xabi Alonso understood to be a strong admirer of his technical ability and tactical intelligence.

Barrios has emerged as a priority target after Chelsea were unable to secure Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara during the final stages of the summer transfer window. Alonso reportedly sees the Atletico star as a player capable of improving Chelsea’s ball progression, maintaining composure under pressure and helping establish greater balance in midfield. His ability to move possession quickly is considered particularly suited to the style the Spanish coach wants to develop.

However, Atletico Madrid are unlikely to welcome Chelsea’s approach. Barrios has become an important part of Diego Simeone’s midfield plans and remains protected by a huge €500 million release clause. Atletico’s stronger financial position following Apollo Sports Capital’s arrival as majority shareholder could also make negotiations even more difficult, leaving Chelsea facing the prospect of having to make a substantial offer to test the Spanish club’s resolve.

Chelsea’s aggressive transfer activity during the summer has given them considerable financial flexibility for another major investment. The club spent more than £345 million on new arrivals while generating almost £390 million through player sales, making them one of Europe’s biggest earners in the transfer market during the period. That financial position could allow the Blues to make a serious attempt to bring Barrios to Stamford Bridge when the January window opens.
