League officials will meet with senior club representatives in London on Thursday, and the incident, which they described as having “overshadowed” what had otherwise been a strong start to the season, is expected to be discussed further.

In Manchester City’s 1-0 away victory over Manchester United on September 13, Erling Haaland’s winning goal was allowed to stand despite Enzo being in an offside position and interfering with play. Manchester United quickly received an apology, while refereeing chief Howard Webb admitted that it was a “mistake in judgment.” The VAR official responsible for the decision, Matt Donohue, along with his assistant Blake Antrobus, were also temporarily removed from duties.

However, the controversy does not appear to have ended there. In a document circulated to clubs ahead of the shareholders’ meeting, the Premier League confirmed that the incident is currently under review.

In a document seen by The Times, the Premier League stated:

“Despite a positive start to the season, the early-season refereeing performances have been overshadowed by a significant VAR error during the Manchester United vs Manchester City match on Sunday, September 13.”

“VAR failed to identify Enzo’s offside infringement and incorrectly overturned the original offside decision, allowing the goal to stand. The Professional Referees’ body (Pro Ref) is conducting a full review of the incident, and the Premier League will review the findings, with lessons learned to be implemented immediately.”

While some clubs reportedly welcomed the transparency and the league’s willingness to publicly acknowledge VAR mistakes, others were said to be surprised, believing that further attention was unnecessary given how quickly the issue had already been addressed.

On Sunday, Fulham head coach Álvaro Arbeloa accused match officials of showing bias towards Manchester United after his side’s 1-1 draw at Craven Cottage, suggesting that the Manchester derby controversy had influenced refereeing decisions.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Arbeloa said:

“After the game against Manchester City last week, I knew they didn’t like Manchester United losing.”
