In the UEFA Nations League, Norway lost 1-2 to Portugal. After the match, Martin Ødegaard and Bernardo Silva spoke separately about the foul in stoppage time.

In stoppage time, Ødegaard was encouraging his teammates to keep pushing an equaliser when Bernardo Silva brought him down from behind. Silva was shown a yellow card, while Ødegaard was clearly in pain and punched the ground in frustration.

Ødegaard said: “He completely lost his head. I had played the ball a long time before that, and he still kicked me down. I have absolutely no idea what he was doing at the time.”

Norway centre-back Leo Østigård told VG and other media: “The foul from Bernardo was very late. From the video replay, it looked like a very aggressive challenge. I think a red card could definitely have been shown.”

Ødegaard sat on the pitch for a while, holding his leg. Although he stayed on until the final whistle, he was clearly affected by the knock.

Ødegaard said: “I took a knock to my ankle. It definitely won’t feel great tonight, but hopefully I can recover over the next few days.”

Norway head coach Ståle Solbakken said: “His ankle took a very serious blow. In that situation, it would have been better for him to come off and receive ice and compression treatment.”

Norway team doctor Ola Sand did not make any further comment when leaving Ullevaal Stadium in the early hours of Monday morning.

Bernardo Silva did not spend long in the mixed zone, but as he left Ullevaal Stadium, he commented on the incident: “My friend, that’s football.”

After hearing Silva’s response, Østigård said: “That’s ridiculous. It was a very bad challenge, really terrible. It’s not something we want to see happen to our captain. And because the challenge came so late, it certainly looked very deliberate.”
