Barcelona’s European Trophy Haul Under Scrutiny as Negreira Case Puts Seven Titles at Risk

Barcelona’s European Trophy Haul Under Scrutiny as Negreira Case Puts Seven Titles at Risk

Barcelona are once again under scrutiny over the Negreira case, which centers on payments made to companies lined to former RFEF refereeing committee vice president Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira. The club reportedly paid more than €7 million between 2001 and 2018, maintaining that the money was used for refereeing reports and consulting services rather than to influence match decisions.

The case remains under investigation, and Barcelona has not been found guilty of wrongdoing. However, UEFA has received new documents related to the matter after Real Madrid submitted material that reportedly included evidence and testimony. Any disciplinary action would depend on whether UEFA determines that Barcelona breached regulations within its jurisdiction.

The period covered by the payments coincided with one of the most successful eras in Barcelona’s European history. The club won four Champions League titles between 2001 and 2018, lifting the trophy in the 2005-06, 2008-09, 2010-11 and 2014-15 seasons. Barcelona also claimed three UEFA Super Cups during that period, taking its total number of potentially affected European trophies to seven.

UEFA could impose sanctions if Barcelona were found to have committed a breach serious enough to fall under its regulations. Possible consequences could include exclusion from the Champions League and measures affecting trophies won in UEFA competitions. However, there has been no ruling that any of Barcelona’s European titles will be removed, meaning the seven trophies remain officially recognized while the investigation continues.

Barcelona also collected nine La Liga titles, six Copa del Rey trophies and seven Spanish Super Cups during the same period. Those domestic honors fall outside UEFA’s authority and therefore cannot automatically be affected by any UEFA decision. The distinction between European and domestic jurisdiction is central to the case, with the potential consequences for Barcelona’s European record depending on the outcome of the ongoing proceedings.
