Manchester United will have several important decisions to make over the future of four experienced players before the 2026/27 season reaches its conclusion. Bruno Fernandes, Lisandro Martinez, Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw are all approaching the final stages of their current contracts, although the club holds different options depending on each player's agreement.
Fernandes, Martinez and Maguire all have clauses that could allow United to extend their contracts for another year. Maguire's situation appears the most straightforward, with a 12-month extension already included in his deal. Fernandes can also be retained for an additional season, while Martinez has a similar option as the club assesses the defender's long-term role.
Fernandes remains an important figure at Old Trafford despite experiencing some inconsistent form earlier in the campaign. The United captain enjoyed an outstanding 2025/26 season in terms of assists in the Premier League and has already been involved in discussions over a new contract. Martinez has also retained the trust of the coaching staff, establishing himself alongside Maguire as one of the team's regular central defenders after returning from the World Cup.
Shaw faces a different situation because his current contract does not contain a one-year extension option. United would therefore need to negotiate a fresh agreement if they want to keep the experienced left-back beyond the end of the season. Shaw, who joined from Southampton in 2014, is now the club's longest-serving player and remains involved despite missing three league matches earlier this season because of a minor fitness issue.
The decisions surrounding the four players will also be influenced by United's wider squad plans. Shaw's position is particularly significant after the club opted not to sign a new left-back last summer, despite considering several targets. With the position expected to be a priority in the next transfer window, United must weigh Shaw's experience and current contribution against the need to reshape the squad for the seasons ahead.
