Cristiano Ronaldo has been handed a 30-day suspension and a €255 fine by the Portuguese Football Federation following an incident that led him to leave the national team camp. The disciplinary decision came after a disagreement with coach Jorge Jesus over the forward’s role in the squad. The federation’s disciplinary board upheld the charges against the 41-year-old Al Nassr striker, ruling that he had deliberately violated its regulations governing national team duties.
The incident occurred in Copenhagen ahead of Portugal’s Nations League fixture against Denmark earlier this month. Ronaldo reportedly became frustrated after being left on the bench without playing against Norway, claiming that Jesus had failed to honor previous assurances about his position in the team. The coach denied making any such agreement but later indicated that Ronaldo could still return to the squad following Portugal’s 2-1 victory.
The federation’s disciplinary proceedings were formally opened on October 9, following reports about the incident two days earlier. In its ruling, the non-professional section of the disciplinary board determined that Ronaldo had deliberately breached Article 160(1) of the federation’s disciplinary regulations. However, the decision did not clarify which matches or activities would be affected by the suspension, nor whether any time served under a provisional ban would count toward the final 30-day penalty.
Ronaldo subsequently apologized for failing to acknowledge supporters after the match against Norway and for leaving his teammates behind. He also made it clear that he remained willing to represent Portugal after serving whatever punishment was imposed. During the disciplinary process, his representatives asked the board to consider his career achievements, sporting honors, contributions to football, and public apology as mitigating circumstances. These arguments were presented in an effort to reduce the severity of the sanction.
Before the ruling, Ronaldo had faced a potential suspension ranging from one to six months, along with a financial penalty, under the federation’s rules for players who abandon national team duties without a valid reason. The final punishment was considerably shorter than the maximum possible suspension. Portugal Football Federation president Pedro Proenca also expressed support for Ronaldo’s return once the matter had been resolved, leaving the door open for the veteran forward to continue his international career.
