Arema FC have officially parted ways with head coach Marcos Santos as the club looks to revive its struggling campaign in the 2026/2027 BRI Super League. The decision was announced on Friday, October 23, 2026, following a series of disappointing results that prompted the management to make a major change in leadership.
The decision came after Arema FC went five consecutive league matches without a victory. Their recent 5-1 defeat to Persija Jakarta at Patriot Candrabhaga Stadium in Bekasi on Wednesday, October 21, proved to be a significant setback. Despite entering his second season with the club and gaining valuable experience in Indonesian football, Santos was unable to deliver the improvement expected by the management.
Arema FC have appointed Andre Caldas as interim head coach while the club serches for a permanent replacement. Caldas holds an A Pro coaching licence and has established a strong working relationship with the players. His previous experience leading the team in the head coach’s absence is also expected to help him manage the transition smoothly. His immediate priority is to prepare the squad for their home fixture against Dewa United on Sunday, October 25.
The club’s management stressed that the decision followed careful consideration of both technical and non-technical factors, including lessons learned from previous seasons. Meanwhile, Arema FC will handle Santos’s contractual obligations and outstanding entitlements in accordance with the agreed terms. The club also expressed appreciation for his commitment during his time in charge, despite the disappointing results that ultimately led to his departure.
With Caldas temporarily taking control, Arema FC now face an important period as they attempt to regain consistency and remain competitive in the league. The upcoming match against Dewa United will provide the interim coach with his first major test. The management also hopes to restore confidence among supporters and has called on Aremania, Aremanita, and the wider Malang community to continue backing the team as the club works toward a fresh start.
