Barcelona are reportedly preparing to offer Gerard Martin a new contract following his impressive performances in defence. The young defender has continued to make a strong impression with his consistency and composure, earning recognition from the club’s sporting department. His display against Paris Saint-Germain further strengthened his position as an important part of Barcelona’s plans for the coming seasons.
Martin entered the match against PSG with concerns over his fitness after suffering a minor injury during Barcelona’s encounter with Real Betis. Although medical tests revealed no significant damage, the club remained cautious about his condition. Despite those concerns, the 24-year-old delivered an outstanding performance at the heart of the defence, helping Barcelona contain one of the most dangerous attacking sides in European football.
His statistics reflected his influence throughout the game. Martin recorded 14 ball recoveries, completed 58 passes with an accuracy rate of 92 per cent and lost possession just once. He also won every ground and aerial duel, collected four loose balls and drew two fouls from his opponents. His ability to read the game, win challenges and distribute the ball accurately made him one of Barcelona’s standout performers on the night.
Martin’s growing importance is also evident in his record during El Clasico encounters. Unless there is an unexpected change, he is expected to start Barcelona’s next match on Sunday, which would mark his sixth appearance in the famous rivalry over three seasons. His previous performances, including an impressive display against Rodrygo in the Copa del Rey final, have further demonstrated his ability to handle high-pressure occasions.
Barcelona sporting director Deco is now looking to reward Martin’s progress with an improved contract. His current deal runs until 2028, but the club reportedly wants to extend it by another two or three years, potentially keeping him at Camp Nou until 2030 or 2031. The proposed renewal would reflect Barcelona’s confidence in his development and their desire to retain a defender who could play an increasingly important role in the team’s long-term future.
