Harry Kane has won the 2026 Ballon d’Or, becoming the first English footballer in 25 years to receive the prestigious individual award. The Bayern Munich striker beat strong competition from Kylian Mbappé and Lamine Yamal after delivering an outstanding season for both club and country. The ceremony took place at the London Palladium, where Kane received a warm reception from the audience. His victory marked a historic moment for English football, with Michael Owen being the last Englishman to win the award in 2001.
At 33, Kane earned recognition for his remarkable performances with Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga and the UEFA Champions League, as well as his contribution to England’s run to the World Cup semifinals. He scored an impressive 73 goals during the season, demonstrating his consistency, finishing ability, and importance to his teams. His achievement placed him among an exclusive group of English winners, joining legends such as Stanley Matthews, Bobby Charlton, Kevin Keegan, and Michael Owen. Kane’s success also followed Ousmane Dembélé’s victory in 2025 and Rodri’s win in 2024.
The competition for the award was particularly intense, with Mbappé and Yamal also enjoying memorable campaigns. Mbappé finished as the leading scorer in World Cup history with 22 goals, including 10 during the latest tournament, while Yamal helped Spain secure the World Cup title. Despite their achievements, Kane finished at the top of the final rankings, followed by Mbappé in second place and Yamal in third. The results highlighted the remarkable individual performances that shaped the season, while also reflecting Kane’s influence across multiple major competitions.
Beyond the main award, the ceremony celebrated several other outstanding figures in football. Yamal received the Men's Young Player of the Year award for his performances with Barcelona and Spain. Spain coach Luis de la Fuente was named Coach of the Year after leading his national team to World Cup glory, while goalkeeper Unai Simón claimed the Men's Goalkeeper of the Year award. Kane’s victory also added a new chapter to the Ballon d’Or’s history, which has been dominated over the past two decades by Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, who have won eight and five titles respectively.
Kane’s achievement represents the culmination of a long and challenging career rather than an overnight success. Before reaching the top of world football, he experienced several loan spells and had to work his way through numerous obstacles to establish himself among the game’s elite. He expressed gratitude to his teammates, coaches, former club Tottenham, Bayern Munich, England, and his wife, Kate, whose support played an important role throughout his journey. His triumph serves as an inspiring example for young players, showing that persistence, dedication, and belief can lead to the highest levels of success in football.
