Arsenal Face Major Setback in Pursuit of Julian Alvarez as January Move Looks Unlikely

Arsenal Face Major Setback in Pursuit of Julian Alvarez as January Move Looks Unlikely

    0 0

Arsenal’s hopes of signing Julian Alvarez from Atletico Madrid in January have suffered a significant setback, with a winter transfer now appearing increasingly unlikely. Manager Mikel Arteta remains interested in the Argentine forward, but recent developments in Madrid suggest that the Gunners may have to wait until the end of the 2026/27 season before making another serious attempt to bring him to the Premier League.

Alvarez attracted widespread attention during the 2026 World Cup after expressing his desire to explore a move away from Atletico Madrid. The former Manchester City striker reportedly showed a strong preference for Barcelona, a club he has admired since childhood. His comments sparked tension between the two Spanish rivals, particularly as Barcelona were viewed as a potential destination for the highly rated forward.

Atletico Madrid have maintained a firm stance on Alvarez’s future, refusing to consider a sale to Barcelona regardless of the proposed fee. Arsenal also explored the possibility of signing him, but their interest was not met with the same enthusiasm, as the player remained uncertain about returning to English football. Despite those complications, reports from Tribal Football suggest that Arteta has not abandoned his interest in the Argentine international.

However, Alvarez’s situation at Atletico has gradually improved in recent weeks. The 26-year-old has been reintegrated into Diego Simeone’s squad, suggesting that relations between the player and the club are moving in a more positive direction. This development has reduced the likelihood of a January departure and made an immediate switch to north London increasingly difficult to arrange.

Alvarez has also reportedly apologised for his actions and comments during the summer as part of efforts to rebuild his relationship with Atletico and the club’s supporters. His approach has been welcomed by Simeone, further strengthening the possibility of him remaining in Madrid for the foreseeable future. With the club showing little willingness to let him leave mid-season, Arsenal may need to postpone their pursuit until the summer of 2027, when the transfer situation could become clearer.
