Lazio have made an impressive start to the 2026/27 Serie A campaign, establishing themselves as the league’s sole leaders after securing a narrow 2-1 victory over Cagliari at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday, November 1. Goals from Gustav Isaksen and Andrea Pinamonti secured all three points, allowing the capital club to move ahead of their closest rivals, Inter Milan, and take control of the standings.
Head coach Gennaro Gattuso believes the team's remarkable progress comes down to hard work, discipline, and a collective commitment to playing with high intensity. He has emphasised that every player understands their responsibilities on the pitch, particularly when it comes to maintaining defensive organisation. For Gattuso, consistency and a shared mentality have been far more important than individual performances or goals.
The Italian manager also acknowledged that Lazio still have areas to improve, especially after their defensive lapses against Sassuolo, when they conceded twice following moments of lost concentration. Such mistakes have reinforced the importance of staying focused throughout every match. Gattuso wants his players to maintain their intensity and tactical discipline, knowing that even brief lapses can leave the team vulnerable.
Lazio's current position is particularly impressive considering the pressure surrounding Gattuso earlier in the season. His future came under scrutiny following a disappointing defeat in the opening round of the Coppa Italia in August. However, the setback did little to disrupt the team's belief in their project. Instead, the players continued working together, remained committed to their objectives, and avoided allowing criticism to affect their progress.
The club's rise to the top of Serie A has also brought back memories of their successful past. Former president Sergio Cragnotti was present in the stands for the victory over Cagliari, adding a nostalgic touch to an important evening for the supporters. Cragnotti was the last president to celebrate a Serie A title with Lazio in 2000. Gattuso expressed his admiration for the former club president, while Lazio now have the opportunity to build on their strong start and establish themselves as genuine contenders throughout the campaign.
